New Insurance policy for MMA Fighters

Las Vegas, Nevada – Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship® brand, announced today that nearly 350 UFC® and STRIKEFORCE® independent contractor athletes will now be eligible for customized accident insurance coverage. The coverage will be underwritten by Houston Casualty Insurance Company and complement existing event coverage the company already provides its athletes. Never before has a combat sports promoter provided coverage to nearly 350 athletes, and this unprecedented policy will cover accidental injuries suffered by athletes while training, as well as non-training incidents such as automobile accidents.

To date, Zuffa event-related insurance has always met or exceeded Athletic Commission requirements and has covered all injuries sustained during competition. After exploring the purchase of “training insurance” for its athletes for several years – much of which was met with difficulty in finding an insurance company willing to insure mixed martial artists – Zuffa officials were able to secure a comprehensive plan through A+ rated Houston Casualty.

The new policy adds 24-hour worldwide medical life insurance and dental coverage, as well as emergency medical evacuation. Zuffa will pay 100 percent of the premiums for its athletes and have an employee dedicated to handling and filing all claims.

“Our athletes are some of the very best in the world and we’ve committed significant financial resources to provide them with insurance that complements the gold standard we have set for event-related coverage,” UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said. “We’re pleased to provide coverage that enables our athletes to seek and receive treatment for injuries sustained while preparing for bouts.”

“As this sport continues to grow, we have been working hard to secure additional insurance coverage so that our athletes can perform at the highest levels,” UFC President Dana White said. “We’re proud to give our athletes access to this type of insurance.”

Nick Diaz to fight Georges St.Pierre

Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre
Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre
If the UFC is looking for another welterweight challenger to face champion Georges St-Pierre, they need look no further.
Nick Diaz is ready to accept the challenge to face St-Pierre in the Octagon, it’s just a matter of UFC owners Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White making him the offer. This is according to his manager and trainer Cesar Gracie, who says Diaz is more than ready to step up to the challenge and face St-Pierre next.
“Nick wants that fight. He would love to take that fight,” Gracie told MMAWeekly Radio. “Obviously, I would like to put another one of my guys against Georges St-Pierre, so we definitely want that fight.”
Since his win over Paul Daley in Strikeforce in early April, Diaz has been making noise that he wants to take a shot in the pro boxing arena for his next contest in combat sports. His trainer believes Diaz definitely wants to box, but it has just as much to do with motivation or lack thereof with no contenders currently knocking on his door in Strikeforce.
“It’s no secret Nick was a little bit burnt out. He needs a bigger challenge,” Gracie stated. “No disrespect to the guys he’s been fighting because each one of them has brought something to the table. Paul Daley hits really hard, good hands, very dangerous opponent. (Evangelista) Cyborg, great kicks, dangerous opponent. K.J. Noons really good boxing also, dangerous, and Nick beat them all at their strengths.
“It’s definitely something Nick wants to motivate him even more. I think he kind of needs that, I really do.”

Diaz’s move to boxing was also financially motivated, according to Gracie. When the Stockton, Calif., native signed off on his new Strikeforce deal last year, he apparently accepted less per bout in the MMA realm on the condition that he’d be able to make up the difference by boxing.
As of yet, the boxing matches haven’t happened, so Diaz is looking to push himself out there to make it happen. The flipside, however, is if the UFC and Zuffa want Diaz to face St-Pierre, with a few conditions being met, they are happy to make that fight happen instead.
“The way we had the Strikeforce contract that we signed about a year ago, maybe a little less than that, was that here we’re going to pay you this much money per fight. It’s not quite the kind of money you probably should be making, but you’re going to be able to make it up because you’re going to be able to do boxing, and that might be the more lucrative deal. There was pluses involved and one of the benefits or bonuses, whatever you want to call it, was being able to box,” Gracie explained.
“Now all of a sudden if that’s taken away, we need to re-structure the contract maybe, that’s the only thing. I’m thinking that Dana’s going to be perceptive to this and Nick also working with that. It’s just one of those things we all have to sit down and figure it out.”
Over the UFC 129 weekend, UFC president Dana White stated several times that he planned on flying out to California to meet with Diaz and Gracie to iron out Diaz’s future. White admitted that Diaz has every right to box if he wants to based on his contract, but he was hopeful to keep him involved in MMA instead.
A fight with Georges St-Pierre might be just the medicine the doctor ordered.
“However, there’s a lot of questions to be answered and really the only people that can answer the questions are Lorenzo and Dana,” said Gracie.
“It’d be great, best case scenario for us would be Nick boxes and then he goes and fights GSP. But again, the person with the answer, the guys that have the answers to all of this and can make everything happen is Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White.”
Gracie says that White has not called him or Diaz yet to schedule a meeting so they can sit down at the table and figure things out, but he believes it will happen soon enough.
Gracie also believes that stylistically, Diaz is the perfect combination of striking and ground skills to give St-Pierre fits, and if they do face off later this year he thinks it’s his fighter who will come home with a gold belt around his waist.
“I feel pretty good about that fight as far as Nick having the chance to take care of business and bring the belt home back to the U.S. and Northern California,” Gracie stated.
Now it’s up to the UFC and St-Pierre to decide if they want Nick Diaz as badly as Nick Diaz wants to face Georges St-Pierre.

UFC 129 Results from the Rogers Centre

Saturday night's fight result's from UFC 129 in Toronto,Ontario where over 55,000 people cheered from the stands of the Rogers Center. The night started off great. Ben Henderson dominated the cage to gain a win over Mark Bocek for 30-27 unanimous desicion.

The fight between Matsushenko and Brilz ended as quickly as it started, with Matsushenko getting a stoppage via KO in the first round. Brilz couldn't believe the decision and was confused when he awoke and asked the ref what happened and why did he stop it.

I couldn't believe my eyes after witnessing what happened to him last night. He clearly is done with his UFC career. Hat's off to him thought he put in a good 15 years of excellent fights but it's obvious that he out of his league and can't handle the younger generation. Lyoto Machida pulled off a straight kick to Couture's chin and knocked him out in the second round.

The next bout was between Jose Aldo and Mark Hominick that turned into a battle lasting 5 full rounds with Aldo pulling off a win. Thanks for coming out Hominick and much respect for being a canadian fighter going for the belt but Aldo is much faster and tougher.

The main event between Jake Shields and Georges St.Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship belt turned out to be another shot for shot fight like the the St.Pierre and Koshchek. But it looked like St.Pierre although throwing more punches and kicks looked like he could have lost the fight. I was not overly impressed with this fight but believe St.Pierre suffered a cut under the eye which caused him to stay on defence against Shields but still pulled off the win with a unanimous decision.

JON JONES IS OUT OF THE RASHAD FIGHT

Breaking News for the UFC, Jon "Bones" Jones has made an announcement that he will not be able to Fight Rashad Evans at UFC 133 due to an injury.

After reports of him and his brother wrestling in there hotel recently. I'm wondering if he will be able to come back and keep the same tempo that he has going for him. He has told media that it was pre-existing problem and want to take the time out to fix it before it's too late.

Jones has recently tweeted this comment, "For the few that are accusing me of dodging a fight, remember God has not given me the spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind" He obviously has the right mind set and will overcome this. As for now let's see if Rashad is ready to fight Phil Davis. Phil has agreed to take Jones's spot at UFC 133

Donald Brashear, an enforcer for the N.H.L has a deal to fight MMA set for early June in Quebec. He still has to pass a medical and get a licence from the Quebec authorities. Brashear a brawler of sorts has played for teams like Montreal, Philadelphia, Washington, Vancouver and the Rangers.

The 6'3, 237 lb Brashear had 2,634 penalty minutes in 1,025 N.H.L games from 1993 to 2010, adding 85 goals and 120 assists. In my opinion a man at 39 years of age shouldn't be allowed to be able to enter the octagon. There's plenty of fish in the pool that have been training for several years and don't get a shot at it. To me this is publicity stunt and it shouldn't be allowed.

There should be rules set for these such instances where you need to be actively training for MMA for a minimum of at least 5 years.

GETTING EXCITED UFC 129 IS COMING!!!!

I'm getting so excited, exactly 2 weeks from the big show in Montreal. I'm so happy for GSP and his training camp. With Firas Zahabi, Greg Jackson and Phil Nurse in his life.

They have done everthing right for Georges. His training is top notch. His nutritionist has taught him everything right about eating good food.

He even knows when not to have dairy, like before fight, he says it that creates a film on your throught and distracts the breathing, that's what I mean about being diligant, he really deserves to win this fight. Now don't get me wrong i'm not completly sold on it either cause Sheilds really does have what it takes to be a champion. He's spent some time oversees fighting some incredible fighters, and has learned alot. I just can't wait to see this unfold.

St.Pierre visualizes Toronto celebration

by Kevin Lole  Yahoo Sports

Fighting is not easy, even if watching Georges St. Pierre tear through the cream of the crop of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight division makes it seem so.
The UFC welterweight champion has won 14 of his past 15 fights and also won 30 consecutive rounds. Much of his success, obviously, is due to physical gifts that the rest of us mere mortals don’t possess, as well as a work ethic unsurpassed in the sport.
St. Pierre isn’t content with being great; each time out, he’s looking to improve upon his last performance. He’ll meet Jake Shields, perhaps his toughest test to date, in the main event of UFC 129 on April 30 before a North American-record crowd at the Rogers Centre in Toronto expected to be in excess of 55,000. The pressure on St. Pierre will be immense, not only because of the challenge that Shields offers, but also because of the weight of the expectations he’ll carry with him into the cage.
The card will be the first major show held in Ontario since mixed martial arts was legalized in the province last year, and St. Pierre will be the overwhelming favorite of most of those in attendance, as well as the millions around the world who will watch on pay-per-view.
It’s expected to be a zany scene inside the Rogers Centre. UFC president Dana White has long campaigned to have the sport legalized in Ontario and New York, the latter of which is an ongoing battle, and the card on April 30 will be something of a celebration of the sport.
White has preached repeatedly about how fighters are often overcome by UFC jitters and how the first time a fighter competes in the promotion that it can be mentally overwhelming and sap him of strength. He expects those pressures to increase tenfold for the Toronto show.
“It’s definitely going to impact some guys,” White said. “Nobody has ever been around this. In Japan, there have been huge crowds at PRIDE shows, but it’s dead quiet. Nobody says a word there. In Toronto, it’s going to be insane.

People are going to be roaring and I have no doubt that some guys are going to have a tough time handling that.” It’s almost impossible to prepare for the scene, since it’s never been seen in MMA before, but nothing he encounters will surprise St. Pierre. He’s already made the walk from the locker room and stood in the center of the cage, gazing around at the raucous crowd.
He has, that is, in his mind. St. Pierre is a large believer in visualization and took advantage of a promotional stop in January to check out the stadium. He made certain to replicate the walk he’ll make as he heads to the cage to meet Shields, and to close his eyes and imagine the scene when he finally hits the cage.
“It’s something I’ve done for a while and it helps me to be more comfortable in whatever the situation may be,” St. Pierre said. “It’s going to be a huge crowd that night, and I just went over in my mind what it will be like so there are no surprises.”
It’s called mental rehearsal and is almost always far more productive than just “focusing,” as many athletes say.

UFC 129: Georges St-Pierre & Jake Sheilds Get Three Primetime Shows

UFC Primetime, produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®), is a look into the lives and preparation of St-Pierre, arguably the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter, and Shields, who has notched 15 straights wins over the likes of Yushin Okami and Dan Henderson and has not lost since 2004, as the showdown between the two welterweight titans in Toronto approaches.

Spike TV will present three special weekly installments that will take viewers to the Bay Area of California to see how Shields is honing his patented “American Jiu Jitsu” skills for his title shot, and to Montreal to see how St-Pierre, one of the most beloved athletes in Canada, is preparing for his title defense.

It’s no secret that UFC has very big aspirations for UFC 129 and they look to be pulling
out all the stops for the show. I do question announcing the show only three days before it is supposed to air on television, but at least they did announce it shortly ahead of time.

Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami possible for UFC Rio in August by Tim

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s return to Brazil could feature middleweight champion Anderson “Spider” Silva defending his title against number one contender Yushin “Thunder” Okami.Silva (28-4) is coming off an incredible knockout victory over fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort at UFC 126. Okami (16-5) became the number one middleweight contender with a unanimous decision win over Nate Marquardt at UFC 122 in November 2010. Okami has always seemed to be on the doorstep of a title fight and he finds himself there once again after winning six of his last seven fights.
There has been a lot of speculation of a potential super-fight between Silva and current welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. The buzz escalated following Silva’s knockout of Belfort. Both fighters have acknowledged the possible showdown but have stayed focus on their own title defenses. St-Pierre has a tough task ahead when he defends his title against Jake Shields at UFC 129 on April 30th. However, if GSP gets by Shields does he leapfrog Okami?
UFC Rio takes palce from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27th.
